Yankees, the angels seek to avoid extending the skates at 4 games

Aaron Judge comes out of his worst series of a season in which he flirted with an average of .400, but New York Yankees are not affected.
Instead, New York’s goal is focused on avoiding a fourth consecutive defeat of the season on Monday evening when they welcome Los Angeles Angels for the opening of a series of four games.
The Yankees swept a series of three games against the angels from May 26 to 28 when they recorded a pair of victories in a round to accompany a 5-1 victory. These matches gave New York an advance of seven games in the American League East and was part of a 16-4 race which was preceded by a sequence of three consecutive defeats from May 3 to 5.
The judge held an average of .391 after the previous meeting with the angels but returned to the house while reaching .378.
While the judge hits 0.327 (18 for 55) in his last 15 games, he went 1 for 12 this weekend while the Yankees scored four points, produced 15 strokes and hit 27 times while being swept by the Boston Red Sox.
“I don’t think about it much,” said Ben Rice from New York. “If I could have this guy who strikes each bat even if he is not at his best, I would do it. I am sure he will bounce back. He will go well.”
The Yankees were laundered for the third time this season in a 2-0 defeat on Sunday. The judge was 0 for 4 with three stick withdrawals.
“It usually helps any striker when you swing the strikes,” said the judge. “Certainly a few out of the edge or the edge throws, you know, taking hacks that just try to make something move.”
The judge and the Yankees can obtain more aid for a program that leads the AL with circuits (109), races (370) and an average (0.256) if Giancarlo Stanton returns from an elbow injury which has gone away since the start of spring training. Stanton spent this weekend in the last stages of his rehabilitation and could be activated on Monday or Tuesday.
The angels have been 8-7 since scoring three points against the Yankees. Los Angeles tries to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat after a setback of 11-2 against the Baltimore Orioles host on Sunday when they made two errors and granted 12 strokes.
Nolan Schanuel dominated and hits 0.312 (29 for 93) in his last 25 competitions, but the angels have been kept for five strokes.
Mike Trout was without success on Sunday but hits 0.302 (16 for 53) since his return from a dead left knee on May 30.
“We have to go to New York and get back on the right track,” said Los Angeles manager Ron Washington. “No one has lost confidence in this room in there. We just have to play better baseball.”
The angels will have their next chance to bounce back after a weekend lost against Clarke Schmidt (3-3, 3.60 ERA).
Schmidt granted four strokes in six rounds in the New York 1-0 victory in Los Angeles on May 28 and he granted three points or less in nine of the 10 departures, including Wednesday, when he gave two strokes of six-rounds of a 6-3 victory against the Royals of Kansas City.
Schmidt is 1-1 with an MPM of 4.35 in three career appearances (two departures) against the angels.
Jose Soriano (4-5, 3.86) will start for the angels after obtaining a career summit of 12 stick withdraws in seven-rounds during a decision against the A Tuesday. Soriano launched at least seven rounds for the fourth time this season and took a safe hit in the sixth while launching with his highest speed of the season.
Soriano begins against Yankees for the first time. The right -hander made an appearance in relief against them in Los Angeles on July 19, 2023. He granted a race on two strokes in 1/3 of a round.
