Kathy Bates It was frank to consider retirement before CBS ‘ Matlock came.
Despite a prolific career extending over five decades, Bates has thought of moving away from action in recent years. It is only when she read Matty’s script in sex Matlock Legal drama that she has reconsidered.
“Let’s say it was a conscious choice. I watched a couple [episodes of the original Matlock series] To see what I could withdraw, but our show is so different. I have the impression that this part was written with me in mind, ”shared Bates in a June 2025 edition of VarietyThe actors of the actors. “”[Creator] Jennie Snyder Urman created it. And I am lucky because I heard, originally, they wanted to do [my character] The great-great-granddaughter of Andy Griffith. So she would be 30 years old.
Bates was delighted to have the opportunity to tell real stories about aging.
“But Jennie made a walk, and she came to her that she wanted to write something about older women and feel invisible,” she continued. “When I read the script for the first time, I thought it was just episodic, and I am not interested in doing it. Bates made the headlines when she seemed to refer to this Matlock was his last project, saying The New York Times“It’s my last dance.” Bates said that she had planned to go from action after a film filming has “ass” on the experience, but Matlock changed her mind.

During an episode of the podcast “Dinner’s on Me”, Bates credited the executive producer Ryan Murphy For how he “rejuvenated” his career after throwing him into his anthology series FX American horror story.
“Just before he gave me the opportunity to make the show, I had breast cancer and [my show] Harry’s law had been canceled rather unpleasant, ”said Bates to the host Jesse Tyler Ferguson. “When this summer happened, it was degrading.”
Bates remembers feeling “a little humiliated” at the time, adding: “I felt as if I had left my breaking and never had an experience like that. And then breast cancer, which takes place in my family, so I was not surprised. ”
The actress admitted that she was not sure that she wins more roles before Murphy’s arrival.
“But it was more painful than I thought,” she noted. “And I really felt like my career.”

According to Bates, she had “one foot at the door” with acting.
