Connolly downplays Glenn Maxwell comparisons

Cooper Connolly opened up about his comparison with Glenn Maxwell after acquiring a contract with Punjab Kings for the IPL 2026 season. PBKS signed Connolly for INR 3 crore during the mini-auction in Abu Dhabi.

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been released ahead of the auction. Additionally, he has decided to stay out of the 2026 auction.

“Not as good as him.”

After Cooper Connolly joined Punjab, many were quick to draw comparisons between the two Australians. During an interaction with Indian media, he was asked about the comparisons.

In his response, he praised Maxwell and said he wasn’t at veteran level yet. “Yeah, I think the comparisons to Maxie, I’ll take it. But he’s a world-class player. I’m nowhere near as good as him.”

“But no, I think the only thing I’m looking forward to is playing positive cricket and looking to win games for Punjab,” Connolly added.

He continues to emphasize a team-oriented mindset, and it’s clear why he joined PBKS: last season ended without a trophy, and this move aims to change that. “But yeah, it’s going to be an exciting group. And obviously last year they didn’t win everything.”

Focused on success, not comparison to Maxwell

The 22-year-old added that next season will be a good one and he is excited to join the team. “But I think this year is looking promising. And yeah, I think I’m just looking forward to getting back into the group and, I guess, chasing the trophy. But yeah, it’s going to be a good season.”

Connolly made it clear that he would not be a version of Glenn Maxwell. He brings his own game and a positive outlook for the upcoming season.
