Farmingdale, Ny – Viktor Hovland withdrew from Sunday singles at the Ryder Cup, one day after making a neck injury.

The Norwegian is at Bethpage Black to support the Europe team, but will not be able to compete. European captain Luke Donald said Havland on Saturday evening would have an MRI.

The withdrawal triggers the rarely used “envelope rule” of the Ryder Cup. When submitting his programming in simple Saturday evening, the captain of the United States team Keegan Bradley had to place the name of one of his players in a sealed wrap that would not play if someone in Europe was withdrawn.

This name was Harris English, who was already to face Hovland in the last in the afternoon match. Instead, the match falls into a draw and each team receives half a point.

Europe is now leading the United States 12-5 before the first single match at 12:02 p.m. HE. As reigning champions, Europe only needs two points to keep the Ryder Cup and 2 1/2 points to win.

Hovland, 28, told journalists on Saturday that the injury was the same who forced him to withdraw from the traveler’s championship at the end of June.

Hovland played during the fourth session on Saturday morning with Robert Macintyre of Scotland and beat Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley, 1. But he was striped four balls alongside Matt Fitzpatrick in England and replaced by another Englishman, Tyrrell Hatton.

“I took pain relievers on the seventh hole, then I received a treatment from Matt Roberts, the physio, on the 10th box of TEE,” said Hovland. “He stayed the same for the rest of the match after that. But I entered and I rested and I got additional treatment and when I came back to the range, I tried to hit a few strokes trying to build the pilot. I hit three or four hard and it worsened.”

Hovland, the FEDEX 2023 Cup champion on the PGA Tour, went 1-1-0 in his two games. It was his third Ryder Cup.

The Englishman, 36, was an automatic qualifier of the American team on the strength of his 2025 season, where he had three first terminals in Majors. But he went 0-2-0 as a partner of Collin Morikawa in the quartet this week, his second appearance of Ryder Cup.
