Trump could leave trade deal next year, top trade official says

Fears that the United States will end CUSMA increase
Hello, I am a member of the live page team. Canadian business and political groups are speaking out at CUSMA hearings in Washington, as fears grow that U.S. President Donald Trump could end the trade deal.
Today, representatives from some of the Canadian industries hardest hit by the tariffs will testify, including steel and aluminum manufacturers’ associations, as well as the automobile and aviation industries.
My colleague Mike Crawley attended the hearings and reported yesterday that speaker after speaker called for an extension of the agreement (called USMCA in the United States), emphasizing how its free trade terms have increased revenues through access to the Canadian and Mexican markets.
As witnesses testified about the deal Wednesday, a reporter asked Trump for his position on its renegotiation.
“We’ll either let it expire or maybe we’ll find another deal with Mexico and Canada,” Trump said at the White House.
The agreement is due to be reviewed by July 2026 and will expire in 2036.
