Tiktok’s latest feature allows students to find and connect with classmates

In a decision reminiscent of Facebook’s beginnings, Tiktok is launching a new feature that allows students to find and connect with others on their campus. The functionality, called Verification Campus, allows users to add their university campus to their Tiktok profile and to browse a list of students from their school.

To access the functionality, users must navigate to their profile and press the “Add school” button. From there, they must enter their school name, then select their graduation year.

To verify that they really go to the school they have entered, they must provide their academic email address. Once finished, their college name and the year of graduation will be displayed on their profile.

Users can then browse the school page, filter a year of graduation and display all the users who added the school to their profile. They can also sort the list of users to display the most followed users first.

Functionality is available in more than 6,000 universities thanks to Tiktok’s partnership with UNADAYS, a student verification platform that confirms the status of students.

Tiktok says that the idea behind the functionality is to transform its platform into a hub for real connections and to belong to the campus, which is essentially what the original Facebook mission was launched in 2004 so that Harvard students connect with each other.

Tiktok’s new feature could be a welcome addition for students who seek to connect with others on campus. However, this also raises concerns about digital confidentiality, as it could allow users to follow others online more easily. Of course, the functionality is optional, so those who prefer to keep their Tiktok presence separated from their student life can choose not to add their school to their profile.

It should be noted that the launch comes when Instagram was spotted by testing a similar functionality last year which would allow users to display their school information and their year of graduation on their profile and connect with other students. It is not known whether the functionality has been scratched or if the meta-ownership platform still plans to deploy it.
