The US Senate has approved a set of $ 9 billion spending discounts that will reach public broadcasting and aid abroad, in a sign that the push to reduce government spending by Elon Musk is expected to survive the billionaire split with Donald Trump.

The NPR and PBS broadcasting institutions would lose federal funding if the package, which the Senate led by the Republicans approved by 51 votes at 48, was signed. The bill would also close the financing of foreign aid subsidies for the American agency for international development.

The measure still needs final approval by the House of Representatives, which should vote this week.

Musk, a key fundraising for the second presidential campaign of Trump, was responsible for finding cost savings via the so-called Ministry of Effectiveness of the Government.

However, the relationship between the American president and the entrepreneur of billionaire technology has been embittered in recent weeks for the disagreement of Musk with Trump’s tax and tariff policies.

Earlier this month, Trump suggested that DOGE could be used to examine the subsidies that Musk Tesla and SpaceX companies receive.

NPR and PBS have long been criticized by right-wing politicians in the United States for alleged liberal prejudices.
