Paris: Sweden of the SAAB and the German defense startup Helsing carried out combat tests of a Gripen e war plane on AI against a real fighter pilot, they said in a step forward in European efforts to contribute to defense autonomy.
The trial of last week is the first known public example of artificial intelligence tested on a war plane beyond the visual beach (BVR) rather than in a dog fight within range, or that the AI has checked a jet in its own right rather than in a test plan.
In May of last year, the Air Force secretary of the time, Frank Kendall, stolen in a modified F-16 called X-62A Vista equipped with automatic learning provided by Shield IA to demonstrate the capacity of the AI to enter an air battle with an F-16 equipped with crew.

Funded by the Swedish government, the trial was not concluding that the Top Human pistol or the enemy propelled by AI has better performed, but the test highlights an increasing accent on the integration of AI and autonomy in combat systems.

Kendall, who resigned from the outgoing administration of Biden after having directed the new American generation hunting project which laid the foundations of the recently launched F-47, said that AI decision-making would regularly surpass humans.
However, Western projects to integrate AI into weapons systems require that humans can intervene at a given time.
The leaders of Saab and Helsing said that the AI initiative illustrated the need for rapid development times and had rejected the schedules of 10 or 15 years of rival projects.
The details of their trial were unveiled before the Paris air show next week, after months of simulator work in which the managers said that the Centaur AI agent had been fed by the equivalent of 30 years of experience each week.
