Liverpool join five-team PL race to sign ‘outstanding’ defender who bagged Wirtz

Liverpool have now reportedly joined a number of other Premier League sides in the race to sign a crucial defender who bagged Florian Wirtz earlier this season.

Liverpool join race to sign Frimpong upgrade

It has been a difficult time for Liverpool and Jérémie Frimpong since the summer. The reigning champions are only just beginning to find their feet after two months of unexpected turmoil made worse by Mohamed Salah’s explosive interview.

Those at Anfield will now hope to be back on track and in Salah’s good books as he heads to the AFCON after an assist against Brighton & Hove Albion.

As for Frimpong, he is yet to make his mark at Liverpool after a choppy start to life on Merseyside surrounded by injury problems. The Dutchman is set to return this month, but it remains to be seen whether he will regain his place ahead of Conor Bradley.

Truth be told, when Bradley and Frimpong were available, neither really claimed that right-back spot. Liverpool, despite welcoming the latter in the summer, have struggled to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold throughout the season.

So while signing a centre-back in the form of Marc Guehi should be high on their priority list, the Reds could also benefit from a permanent option on their right-hand side.

Worse than Konaté: Liverpool star is now a ‘much bigger problem than Salah’

A number of Liverpool’s star players have lost form this season.

What should help their sales pitch on this front is the recent change to the Arne Slot system. Rather than switching either side, Slot has asked Milos Kerkez and, more recently, Joe Gomez, to push high and wide. This is a system designed to form a pentagon-shaped midfield while the backs maintain width.

This is an area where Frimpong should thrive on paper, but he could still have new competition in 2026. According to reports in Spain, Liverpool have now joined the race to sign Daniel Munoz.

Why Munoz would solve Liverpool’s right-back problem

Pursuing Munoz alongside Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, Liverpool are expected to do all they can to sign the Crystal Palace man next year. In terms of attacking fullbacks, the Colombian is arguably the best the Premier League has to offer.

Meanwhile, he’s not really a liability in the other direction. When Crystal Palace beat Liverpool 2-1 at Selhurst Park earlier this season, Munoz silenced the big-money signing Wirtz. The German took just five touches in the Palace box and won just two ground duels, while Munoz was dribbled just once in a dominant display.

Oliver Glasner will no doubt be desperate to keep his flying rear, having praised his running power last year: “Daniel has an exceptional training mentality. In every training session, he is the guy who runs the most, who sprints the most.

“Although he played matches with Colombia during the international break, each match lasted 100 minutes, [he plays] every match [with] the most intensity. It’s every manager’s wish to have such players, and then he gets the reward. [starting every game]”.
