The first 911 hybrid is better with a battery

When Porsche unveiled the new 911 GTS for the first time, he is sure to say that there were not many people on the planet Earth who filled a 911 hybrid. The idea of one of the most emblematic sports cars in the world drawing inspiration from the humble is a concept that is a bit difficult for average automatic enthusiasm to make your head.
But they should try, because the technology that Porsche has deployed in the new 911 GTS, the first Porsche hybrid sports car, is correctly impressive. It is a hybrid system that exists so as not to improve fuel consumption, but to really improve a sports car thanks to the injection of a little high voltage and a lot of boost.
Technology meets tradition
The 911 has maintained its stubborn arrangement held from the start. Its engine is down between and behind the rear wheels, not because it is necessarily the best place for handling, but just because this is how it has always been done. This does not change with the 911 GTS. What is new, however, is the addition of an electric motor in the mixture, increasing this petrol engine in the path of the path. This new engine is perfectly inside the eight-speed double clutch transmission, adding 54 horsepower and 29 pounds of torque.
These figures are hardly remarkable, but the real magic is that the car does other with its new high voltage system. There is actually a second electric motor here, a tiny capable of surviving at ridiculously hot temperatures. It is necessary because he lives in the turbocharger.
A turbocharger is a simple wheel which is turned by the exhaust gas. This in turn turns another wheel which forces the air in the contribution of the engine. It is a simple technology developed more than 100 years ago, but since these first days of forced induction, there has always been a problem with regard to automotive applications: LEG. The dependence of exhaust gases to run the turbocharger creates an intrinsic time between the driver requesting the acceleration and the car which delivered it. Internal combustion must strengthen the pressure to run the wheel to vacuum more air to provide more power.
Porsche short-circuited with this new electric motor which turns the turbocharger up to 120,000 rpm in less than a second. The delay is not completely eliminated, but it is so radically reduced that you barely know. Combine this with the additional and instantaneous torque kick provided by the electric motor in the transmission, and you have something magical: a car powered by petrol which accelerates with all the instant ferocity of an EV.
Design sensitivity
Porsche calls this whole system, the more the 1.9 kWh battery that propels it, t-hybrid. The net profit in the 2025 911 GTS is 532 hp and 449 lb-ft of torque. It is a substantial increase of 59 horsepower compared to the old GTS.
However, the only obvious sign that there is something different in this car is the subtle badges t-hybrids mounted low on the doors. And this is a good thing, because I am of the opinion that the current generation 911, called internally 992.2, is one of the prettiest cars on the road. Even in this resolutely discreet chalk color, it is absolutely striking. The color goes perfectly with the 20 inches and 21 inch black wheels and other ebony reflections around the car.
The interior is also minimalist, monotonous to an extreme. But there are just enough subtle strengths of materials such as carbon fiber and alcantara to make it feel raced and useful, no basis. And, if you wish, you can go with many other wild interior combinations. Porsche is happy to allow you to personalize the contents of your heart, but beware that it will cost you.
The car interface is also simpler than the 911S of yesteryear. Most of the commands have been consumed by the 10.9 -inch car touch screen, serving both Android Auto and Apple Carplay wireless, while a 12.6 -inch virtual virtual gauge cluster lives behind the steering wheel. Physical controls remain well positioned, offering high tactility for your frequent tasks. The most important is perhaps the dial in training mode which is up to the position four hours from the steering wheel. This is how you compose the intensity of the 911 GTS. Or, press the small shiny red button to go completely maneuve.
Conduct
The GTS is not the most powerful 911 in Porsche of the moment. This honor lies in the 911 Turbo S. 640 horsepower, but no other 911 provides power like this, offering a taste of the instantaneous thrust of the mixture with the internal combustion fury and the high-speed acceleration that you expect from a 911.
Just say, quite intoxicating. And to have the best, press this aforementioned Crimson button. This gives you 20 seconds of sporting mode, with the Help with the electronic turbocharger of the car do its more and more to maintain maximum power. The exhaust opens completely, the transmission drops equipment or two and suddenly, this machine that you turn in slow motion by traffic comes absolutely life.
Put your foot in this mode and the 911 GTS climb forward, without a moment of hesitation. You can hear the turbocharger behind your head to whistle while it works to build an intake pressure, transport in the air of the environment and block it directly in the combustion chamber for the next one. It is addictive, but if you have used the power of a silent rise of an EV, it may be a bit a lot. In sport mode, the standard sports exhaust on the GTS is strong enough to terrify anyone that you pass by flat on a two -lane road.
Fortunately, the GTS is easy to silence. A tap of the exhaust button mounted under this touch screen and the GTS becomes silent. It is not very silent, but very silent. Despite the electric motors and a battery, it is not a rechargeable hybrid. You will even find it difficult to get out of your aisle without this engine pulling up. But it’s okay. Do not forget: it is not an efficiency game.
In normal mode, the suspension softens and the ultra-fast transmission passes to something that smooths smoothly from one gear to another, keeping the diets as low as possible to maximize fuel consumption. Which does not reveal the 911 GTS A 19 MPG Coast combined by the EPA. Despite some pieces of driving exuberance, I improved it considerably, managing 25.1 MPG.
But even to its learning, the GTS is not a luxury tourism of Aston Martin DB12 or Mercedes-AMG GT. At its sweetest, the suspension is always firm, the sound of the road to these prodigious tires is the network and even the sound of the wind at high speed is a problem – so much so that the system of its intermediate bose has difficulty overcoming it.
So, despite the nickname GTS, it is more a sports car than a big tourer. Instant energy is the party tour of this car, associated with an incredible sensation, effortless manipulation and a kind of prodigious grip that will make your favorite driving roads feel tamed.
These are all reasons to find your new favorite roads. Despite you having punished on the highway and on the broken asphalt, the 911 GTS never feels agitated and always lets you want more. It is a car that you will not want to go out, which may explain why I write this sentence even from the driver’s seat.
Entry cost
At more than $ 170,000 to start, or $ 196,185 as configured, it is not an affordable machine. If I buy, my GTS would be a little cheaper. I was sticking to the GTS model with a rear drive, rather than at the Carrera 4 with all -wheel drive that you see here, simply for the fun Factor. I would also jump the sunroof, which adds both $ 2,980 to the bill and the weight to a car which has already earned more than 100 pounds compared to the previous GTS.
These two deletions alone would reduce approximately $ 10,000 from this still worrying price. Dear, yes, but the technology here is worth it. This is a new approach to electrification, making a sports car more sporty with practically no compromise. It is a really desirable machine, the type of hybrid that Porsche fans may not know they needed, but they really need to try.
