The director of Superman James Gunn confirms what we suspect about the intrigue of Man of Tomorrow

We may not know exactly which director and co-chief of DC Studios, James Gunn, has in his sleeve with the DC universe as a whole, but it opens at least on a much awaited film to come. After “Superman” flew to theaters this summer to the sweet sound of the cash registers that is triggered at the box office, Warner Bros. has lost a short time to move forward with his follow -up film. When the news recently announced that the rest would be officially entitled “Man of Tomorrow”, the fans began to bring together the clues of what the intrigue will likely shape. Clark Kent / Superman by David Corenswet, Lex Luthor by Nicholas Hoult and Rachel Brosnahan as Lane Lois were locks that were easy to return and resume their roles. But with a universe of possibilities to take history next, how could we reduce the ground a little more?

Fortunately, Gunn did it for us. In a recent interview with the prolific radio host Howard Stern for “The Howard Stern Show” on Siriusxm, the filmmaker spoke of his next director project. Although he stayed in light on real details, he at least confirmed what many fan of comics probably considered obvious from the start. Yes, we can assume in complete safety that “the man of tomorrow” will imply the steel man and his sworn enemy reluctantly associating in order to repel an even greater threat. We will let Gunn take it from here. As he said to Stern:

“It is a story on Lex Luthor and Superman who had to work together, to a certain extent, against a much greater threat. And it’s more complicated than that, but it’s a large part of that. It is as much a Lex film as a superman film […] I loved working with Nic Hoult, who played Lex. I relate to the character of Lex Luthor, unfortunately, so I really wanted to create something extraordinary with both. Oh guy, I love the script so much. I’m delighted that people see the film. “”

The man of tomorrow will be a team film between Superman and Lex … But against whom?

Initially, when this next “Superman” film was described as something different and less simple than a suite, many assumed that James Gunn was simply reflected or was unnecessarily shy on this subject. If he returned to make another film with David Corenswet as Superman alongside a number of other DC characters, many of whom were presented in the first film, what other Could this be in addition to a standard suite? We could have the answer to this, as Gunn explained to Howard that “Man of Tomorrow” will be as much a Lex Luthor film as a Superman. The news that the two enemies will have to team up is not really a bomb, to be fair – we have intuited as much of the different comic strips published by Gunn, Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult on the day of the announcement of the news. But now that it has been officially confirmed, it is worth wondering the next major question point: who will he be fighting exactly at Superman and Lex?

Gunn visibly avoids going into details on this front, but there are many clues so that we can reconstruct ourselves. It goes without saying that a xenophobic like Lex would only be led desperate measures (which, as we remember his final scene in “Superman”, would understand the release or the rupture of the prison of Belle Reve) if another super powerful extraterrestrial planet. We must probably not double on Darkseid or even its Steppenwolf Stooge so early in the restart of Gunn DC or so shortly after the director Zack Snyder trotted similar ground in “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”. We know that the next “Supergirl” will deal with the title of Milly Alcock against the Lobo by Jason Momoa, and that a HBO series “Lanterns” should also arrive. So who could leave us with it?

Maybe a brain appearance is in the cards, as we have speculated here. We know that Gunn actually considered the Android / Cyborg super intelligent for “Superman” it was once before changing speed, so could it be its way of returning to its original plan? Only time will tell us. “Man of Tomorrow” should be released in theaters on July 9, 2027.
