Boston Blue EP Defends Replacing Donnie Wahlberg’s Son Sean

THE Boston Blue The creative team maintains the decision to redesign Donnie WahlbergSean’s son.
When the series premiered on Friday, October 17, some viewers may have been surprised to see Mika Amonsen as Sean after the character was originally played by Andrew Terraciano on Blue blood.
“We love Andrew and the work he’s done over the years on Blue Bloods. Really, we’re telling a new chapter in both of their lives,” the co-showrunner said. Brandon Margolis said Variety. “It’s not only Sean joining the family business so to speak and turning over this new leaf, but it’s also now Danny Reagan being the father. [of] a cop, which he’s never been before.
Margolis called the change “an organic opportunity to introduce a new show with a new energy, to help dramatize this change.” The writers’ room looked forward to “new storytelling avenues to explore” with the spinoff series.
“It’s the same character, it’s the same relationship, but it’s also completely different,” he continued. “We love what Mika brought to Sean, that vulnerability, but also that desire to prove himself. It was just awesome to see it come to life.”
In a separate interview with TV lineMargolis noted that he “loved” watching Terraciano “grow up on television,” adding, “It made sense creatively to find an actor with a different energy.”
He concluded: “And in your opinion, yes, it was a gamble to open the series with a new face – two new faces, in fact – but the story required us to like him right away. Starting with this heroic moment that has a tragic ending was the right way to draw Danny Reagan into this world.”
Amonsen debuted as Sean three months after it was announced that he would recast the role of Wahlberg’s youngest son.
“Sean has moved to Boston to start a new chapter as a patrolman with the Boston Police Department,” a CBS description read at the time. “Sean was committed to continuing his family’s legacy, but he wanted to do it on his own terms, which meant joining a department outside of his hometown. Danny’s decision to stay in Boston gives this father-son duo a chance to reconnect on a deeper level.”
Viewers originally met Danny on Blue Bloods, which ran from 2010 to 2024. Boston Blue broadens Danny’s perspective after fans became invested in his story – particularly with love interest Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), which appeared in the premiere.
“I kept saying to myself, you know, if I really sincerely want Blue Bloods to continue, here’s an opportunity to do it,” Wahlberg, 56, told Fox News Digital in June about whether saying yes to Boston Blue was a “challenge.”
Wahlberg was also asked about how much crossover there would be between Blue blood And Boston Blue.
“Viewers are wondering, ‘How can we continue with a Blue Bloods spinoff without the whole family?'” he noted. “And I share that. How can we do that, right?”
According to Wahlberg, there were discussions about how Boston Blue will respect its Blue blood origins, and he even implied that every other member of the Reagan family was on speed dial.
“Now it’s just Danny going into this new world, but I can’t say much about it – but I could say that if he’s a Reagan, it’ll never just be Danny,” he said at the time. “There will always be a Reagan at hand.”
Wahlberg continued: “And the Reagan traditions, Danny wouldn’t abandon them. »
Blue blood is currently streaming on Paramount+. Boston Blue airs on CBS Fridays at 10 p.m. ET.
