NHL Roundup: Islanders stun Blue Jackets with two late goals

Top overall pick Matthew Schaefer tied the score with 1:07 left in the third period Sunday and Simon Holmstrom produced the game-winning goal just 29 seconds later for the New York Islanders, who upset the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 in Elmont, NY.
With goaltender David Rittich pulled for the extra attacker, Schaefer was credited with his second goal of the game after his shot from just in front of the blue line bounced off the stick of Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski, past New York center Anders Lee and into the net.
Lee also accounted for the game-winning goal, firing a shot from the right post that trickled past Columbus goalie Elvis Merzlikins and along the goal line before Holmstrom knocked it home with 38 seconds left.
Schaefer, the reigning NHL Rookie of the Month, opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 5:53 of Game 1 for the Islanders, who have won two straight after a three-game losing streak. This two-goal game is Schaefer’s first in the NHL.
