The Ministry of Finance is expected to leave its Office of North Block in Kartavya Bhawan-1 of the Central Secretariat-1 joint building newly built soon. According to sources, the travel process has already started and managers will travel in the coming days.
A recent circular from the Ministry of Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Finance had declared that “the change will soon begin, most likely from September 22, 2025”.
“For travel purposes, a transport agency has been hired, which will not install, package and transport items to North Block and unpack and resettlement of articles to CCS1,” he said, adding that the displacement of divisions will be made one by one. He also described the protocol for moving confidential files.
This decision should only include the current departments of the Ministry of Finance which are hosted in North Block – the departments of income, expenses and economic affairs, while the departments of financial services and investment and the management of public assets will continue to operate from their current office premises.
According to sources, the officials have also received cabins in the new building, and the Ministry of Finance should start to work fully from the new office by early October.
This will give enough time to settle and initiate preparations for the Union 2026-27 budget, which will be presented on February 1, 2026.
Political observers were waiting to see if the Ministry of Finance would travel to new offices before the budget or later after its presentation. One of the main problems was that the budgetary press is hosted in North Block. Although the arrangements are taken so that a new more modern budgetary press is hosted in the new building, it is still being developed.
The transition to the new building is part of the central government redevelopment project of the government and the decision to modernize its office complexes and to keep them away from aging buildings housing central ministries, notably Shastri Bhawan and Nirman Bhawan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated Kartavya Bhawan-3 inaugurated.
Several ministries also moved to the new office complex, including the Ministry of Home Affairs which was also hosted in North Block with the Ministry of Finance.
