Swedish court upholds gambling authority’s decision against Kornhults Idrottsklubb

An appeal against the rejection of a license application, filed by Kornhults Idrottsklubb in Sweden, was rejected by the administrative court. The Swedish Gambling Authority has released an update.

The court agreed with the Gambling Authority’s assessment, with the regulator initially deciding to reject the license application on May 26, 2025. The application sought to provide gaming for the public interest.

The Swedish Gambling Authority is the expert authority on games of chance and lotteries. It is responsible for ensuring that the gaming and gambling market in the country is safe and legal. It is through them that permits and licenses for lotteries are issued, while it assumes overall responsibility for compliance and supervision of gaming and lottery operations.

Administrative court approves assessment of Kornhults Idrottsklubb

According to the organization, the prerequisite for obtaining this license is that the applicant actually carries out activities which primarily serve public interest objectives. At the time, the application would have indicated that the main objective of the Kornhults Idrottsklubb was to promote objectives of public interest through, among other things, the practice of sport.

In a translated press release, the regulator said its assessment found the company had not conducted any of its own sporting activities. Instead, they claim the association’s main activity has been running a sports field.

“The Administrative Court shares the assessment of the Swedish Gaming Authority and thus confirms that it is not enough for an association applying for a license to support another association that carries out activities in the public interest to obtain a license,” the translated update said. “The administrative court therefore rejects the appeal of Kornhults Idrottsklubb.”

Sweden’s gambling authority is being thorough, with the regulatory board also releasing an update on the judgment against AB Travoch Galopp (ATG). The Court of Appeal overturned the administrative court’s judgment and upheld the Gambling Authority’s decision, but the sanction fee was reduced from SEK 6 million to SEK 3 million.
