Svenska Spel faces new Spelinspektionen compliance probe amid ongoing regulatory review

Svenska Spel Sport & Casino AB is facing another compliance investigation from Sweden’s gambling authority, Spelinspektionen.
In a recent statement, the regulator said it would supervise Svenska Spel’s gaming establishments, covering turnover and location of ATMs.
Written information, as well as on-site visits, will be requested by the Swedish Gambling Authority to monitor the business.
This is not the first time Svenska Spel has faced controversy in recent months, with the state gaming company under close scrutiny for several incidents.
Svenska Spel has come under scrutiny in recent months
In June, the company was fined SEK 100 million ($10.4 million) by the Spelinspektionen due to serious player welfare shortcomings.
Despite their duty of care to its users, several players have lost excessive amounts of money using the operator.
These losses ranged between 260,000 SEK ($27,000) and 600,000 SEK ($62,000), costing players a large portion of their annual income.
“Svenska Spel Sport & Casino did not ensure continuous follow-up with the customers examined nor take the necessary and individualized measures to limit their gambling.” » said the gaming authority, which led to the fine.
The administrative court, however, annulled the decision, finding that the company had not sufficiently failed in its responsibilities.
Additionally, last month Svenska Spel and the Swedish Online Gambling Trade Association (BOS) clashed publicly over possible plans for restrictions on the Swedish gambling market.
Svenska Spel argued for a proposal that would classify games based on risk. Several high-risk games would therefore be subject to particular restrictions on a certain number of subjects.
The BOS argued that this would likely affect online casinos more than any other sector of the industry. This sector already competes with illegal and unlicensed businesses.
This case is still ongoing as of this writing. The results of this latest compliance investigation will be available once the review is complete.
