Seven episodes, Star Trek: Strange new worlds I just started his first original idea of the season. And then he ruined it with a documentary gadget and perverted it by dismissing the great ideas of history in favor, once again, of the haunting new characters.
The episode is called “What is Starfleet?” And implies the company crew in a mission of transporting a living weapon on the surface of the ocean from a planet to a neighboring species involved in a brutal war. The weapon turns out to be intelligent, suffering and a reluctant participant. The Enterprise crew must fight against the moral implications to follow their mission while finding a way to communicate with this dazzling and fatal creature. Or at least, the story happens in the background.
This story is a kind of classic science fiction tale, the one we have not seen well in this way before. If it had been the objective of the episode, it could have been one of the best entries in the whole series. Unfortunately, this is not the case.
The real objective of the episode is a story that has been built for some time now in the series. Erica Ortega’s brother was on the ship filming a documentary, and the episode is played on the screen as if we are looking at his finished doc.
So, instead of seeing this beautiful creature in the shape of a butterfly move on the screen and fight with the vessels, we are stuck by looking at what looks like a very good work fx by the Strange new worlds The team through images of grainy security cameras and documentary angles out of Kilter, interspersed The office-Style interviews with the crew.
It sucks.
The real objective of history is the documentary maker who films everything, Beto Ortega. Beto has hidden and harmful patterns, and the episode finally turns into a recruitment video for Starfleet, but not before being also a total accusation of the press. Beto is there with an ax to grind and is not interested in telling the true story of what is happening. Unfortunately, this story is all that the public is interested, but Strange new worlds It does not seem to worry about his audience.
Star Trek: Strange new worlds I can’t get out of his own path. He continues to continue a drama of overworked character to the detriment of good ideas. Usually, it is because the writers of the show have no good ideas, but this time, they did it. Instead of exploring them, the show threw them all.
