Simu Liu slams Hollywood’s ‘prejudice system’

Hollywood has a problem, believes Simu Liu, which he believes lies in the lack of representation of its community, Asian actors.

He shares his reviews on the social media platform Threads. “Put Asians in literally anything right now. The amount of demotion in our on-screen representation is appalling.”

Simu Liu slams Hollywood's bias system

“The studios think we’re taking risks,” the actor adds, adding that this goes against recent examples where Asian actors have starred in films like Minari, goodbye, everything everywhere at once, And Rich and crazy Asianswhich did good business at the box office.

Looking at these examples, he shares, “Each one is a financial success. No Asian actor has ever lost a studio, even close to $100 million, but a white dude will lose 200 million TWICE and go straight to number one. We’re fighting a deeply biased system and most of the time, it sucks.”

Keeping in mind, Simu had also criticized the industry for the lack of visibility for Asian actors in a comment he made under a Facebook post in 2023, which noted that the star was getting “the bulk of Asian roles.”

“A way of trying to pit us against each other. What ‘big’ portion of roles are you referring to? Are there films I’m in that I don’t know about? Do you really think there is a quota of ‘Asian male roles’ that is a zero-sum game?”

“Everything I took after Shang-Chi wasn’t written in Asia. We were able to reshape the stories to get more representation on screen. Get the facts straight,” Simu retorted.
