Shreyas Iyer set to break Virat Kohli’s record in 2nd IND vs NZ ODI

Find out which Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan record Shreyas Iyer is about to break.
Shreyas Iyer is a hugely underrated player for India in one-day international matches. While his rise as a T20 player is a topic for discussion, we will currently focus solely on the ODIs. The former IPL-winning captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has solved major problems for India in the format. Long ago, India faced problem number four.
From 2017 to 2021, not even a single batter has made even 500 runs at this slot in ODIs for India. The best was Ambati Rayudu, who scored 464 runs in 42.18. But interestingly, India used as many as 13 players for this position in these five years, without settling for anyone. All that cutting and changing came to an end once Iyer was given a rope and he turned those lemons into lemonade. Since this period, Iyer has batted at number four 32 times and scored 1479 runs at 54.77.
Huge ODI record that Shreyas Iyer is set to break
Now, he will be next in action during the second India vs New Zealand ODI in Rajkot. After missing out on a well-deserved fifty runs in Vadodara, he is just 34 runs short of setting a huge record. Well, with currently 2966 runs, Iyer is close to the 3000 mark and he might just become the fastest Indian to reach it.
Currently, the record is held by former opener Shikhar Dhawan, who took 72 innings to complete his 3,000 runs in 2016. Iyer, on the other hand, has played just 68 times for India in this format and is just 34 runs short. He is most likely to make it in this series, if not in Rajkot.
Indians to get 3,000 ODI runs in fewer innings with Kohli
| Player | Opposition | Match date | Start time | Matches | Sleeves |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shikhar Dhawan | in Australia | January 20, 2016 | October 20, 2010 | 73 | 72 |
| Virat Kohli | against Sri Lanka | February 14, 2012 | August 18, 2008 | 78 | 75 |
| KL Rahul | in Australia | March 4, 2025 | June 11, 2016 | 84 | 78 |
Virat Kohli, who has almost every ODI record to his name, is second on the list, as he has completed 75 innings. Iyer is well placed to beat him as well and push him to third place. Now Kohli is on a whole new level. With 14,560 runs at an average of 58.60, Kohli is miles ahead of everyone whose name isn’t Sachin Tendulkar. In terms of hundreds, Kohli has already surpassed the great Tendulkar and almost got his 54th ODI ton in Vadodara.

| Babar Azam (PAK) | against New Zealand | June 26, 2019 | May 31, 2015 | 70 | 68 |
If Iyer reaches the 3,000-run milestone in Rajkot, he will join the legendary Sir Vivian Richards at fourth overall, just behind Babar Azam, who has completed 68 runs. The overall list currently belongs to South African Hashim Amla who has taken just 57 innings, 10 less than the next best (Shai Hope, Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq).
