Sheffield United went on Chris Wilder despite the 90 -point campaign

Sheffield United should separate from manager Chris Wilder after the club’s unsuccessful offer for the promotion of the Premier League.

In what marks the end of Wilder’s second term in Bramall Lane, the reports suggest that Ruben sells, previously in charge of Southampton, Reading and Hull, should be appointed his successor.

The Blades finished the championship season in third place, but were denied promotion after a last -minute dramatic defeat against Sunderland in the playoff final.

Wilder, aimed to make a third promotion with the club he supported as a boy, but had fallen short.

Its exit leaves Coventry City as the only one of the three defeated dams teams which will start the next campaign with the same manager.

Wilder’s initial passage to Sheffield United began in 2016. He led the team to the title of Ligue 1 during the first time, and in 2019 had sent them back to the Premier League. Their high -flying return first went better than expected, they finished ninth in their first season.

But a second disastrous campaign followed, and Wilder left in March 2021 with an almost sealed relegation. He then assumed roles at Middlesbrough and Watford before returning to the South Yorkshire in December 2023, after Paul Heckingbottom was dismissed with the team rooted at the foot of the Premier League table.

The 2024-25 season started in difficult circumstances. The club was struck by a two -point deduction due to missed transfer payments compared to the previous year. Despite this, Sheffield United has become strong contenders at the top of the championship.

In December, the long-term sale of the club at Consortium Coh Sports, based in the United States, was completed. A month later, Wilder was awarded a new three -year contract.

At the beginning of spring, United was sitting at two points at the top of the table with only seven games to play. But a disastrous race, defeat against Oxford United, Millwall and Plymouth Argyle in the space of eight days have derailed their promotion charge.

A fourth defeat in Burnley finally forced them in the play-offs, even if they finished with 90 points.

They easily reached Wembley, crushing Bristol City 6-0 in aggregate in the semi-finals. At the national stadium, they took the lead against Sunderland and thought they had doubled it, only for Var to prohibit the objective.

Sunderland equalized, and with Sheffield United temporarily up to 10 men due to an injury after using all their substitutions, Tommy Watson gave a crushing blow with a winner of the 95th minute.
