In what marks a striking production shift for one of Bollywood’s most ambitious projects, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film Love and war rethought his shooting strategy. Although earlier reports indicated that the film’s international schedule in Italy had been canceled, insiders clarify that filming has not been canceled, but rather reshaped to accommodate the actors’ schedules with around ten days of filming in Mumbai and the grand finale now expected to be shot in Italy by December 2025.

According to well-placed industry sources, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali has recreated 1970s Italy right here in Mumbai for Love and war. Around ten days of shooting were completed before Diwali, and the final 20-day schedule, featuring the film’s big climax, is expected to take place by December 2025 in Italy. The team is considering a release for Eid 2026.”
Early reports suggested a complete cancellation of the Italian calendar due to logistical complexities. But the revised strategy shows a different picture: These Italy-bound scenes began in Mumbai, with vast sets recreating 1970s Italian landscapes in the city. Having completed the first phase, production will now move to Italy for the final climax preserving the planned location while taking into account the availability of the actors.
This two-pronged strategy offers multiple gains. Filming in Mumbai minimized scheduling conflicts and logistical overheads at a time when international travel is more complex. Next, the Italian segment will offer the scale, authenticity and grandeur that Bhansali’s paintings are known for for release on Eid 2026, as per the source.
With big stars on board, including Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal, the complex shoot was always under scrutiny. The film had originally planned a 45-day schedule in Italy, but a revision was reported when the location proved logistically complex. Now, the creative team appears to be taking a smart middle path by anchoring early shoots in Mumbai, then expanding the international component when the actors’ schedules align.
This change also suggests Bhansali’s commitment to delivering the opulence and atmosphere his films are famous for by going on location for the climax, instead of settling completely into the interior sets of Mumbai.
The next Italian schedule is set at around 20 days, and its completion will likely pave the way for post-production to begin in earnest. With a release planned for Eid 2026, the timeline aims for a big festive launch. Whether the film will retain all of the planned visual scale remains to be seen, but with Bhansali at the helm, expectations are high.
