Struggle
- The number of victims of the Russian attack on kyiv on Sunday rose to one killed and 18 injured, according to regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk.
- In southern Kherson, at least two people were killed and seven others injured in other Russian attacks, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram.
- In the Donetsk region, at least two people were killed and five injured in Russian attacks on Saturday, according to Governor Vadym Filashkin.
- In Russia, a Ukrainian drone attack killed two men in the Belgorod region, the region’s operational headquarters said in a message posted on Telegram.
- Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed that Russian forces shot down 309 drones over the Donbass region, using the “Donbass Dome electronic warfare system” over the past week, according to Russia’s official TASS news agency.
Peace talks
- US and Ukrainian officials hailed “productive” negotiations on a deal to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, following a meeting on Sunday in the US state of Florida.
- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was optimistic, but said negotiations remained difficult. “We remain realistic about how difficult the situation is, but we remain optimistic, especially since we have made progress,” he said.
- Rubio added that talks would continue later in the week, when U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff visits Russia. “There are a lot of moving parts, and obviously there’s another party involved here [Russia] that will have to be part of the equation, and that will continue later this week when Mr. Witkoff visits Moscow,” he said.
- Ukraine’s new chief negotiator, National Security Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, said Washington had been “extremely supportive” during the talks. “The United States listens to us, the United States supports us, the United States walks alongside us,” he said.
- Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Sergiy Kyslytsya, who also participated, also congratulated the United States, saying “the current meeting started well” and that Rubio showed “great leadership.”
Diplomacy
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Sunday he thanked European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a call. “Ursula pays particular attention to the need to strengthen our resilience in the face of Russia’s constant attacks on our infrastructure and the energy sector,” he said on X.
- German Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said Berlin must prepare for changes in alliances because “we do not know which alliances we can still count on in the future and how long they will last.”
- In his speech to the German Parliament, he said: “The geopolitical chessboard is changing rapidly – its patterns, its layout. Alliances are changing more quickly than would have been previously conceivable.”
- Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Sunday expressed Turkey’s support for peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, in Tehran, according to Turkey’s Anadolu news agency.
Weapons
- Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal announced in a message on X that Ukraine and Norway will jointly produce Ukrainian drones, after signing an agreement with his Norwegian counterpart, Tore O Sandvik.
Regional security
- Lithuania’s Vilnius Airport said Sunday it had temporarily halted operations due to suspicious balloons in its airspace, the latest in a series of flight disruptions across Europe, some linked to Russian drone activity.
- Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli expressed concern over attacks on two ships in the Black Sea on Friday, allegedly carried out by Ukrainian forces targeting Russia’s shadow fleet of sanctioned oil tankers.
- “These incidents, which occurred in Turkey’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, posed serious risks to the safety of navigation, life, property and the environment in the region,” Keceli said in a statement on Saturday.
