In their official version, CWI underlined a data -based selection process that led to the preselection of six candidates for the role, John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Chase and Warrican. The preselected candidates were evaluated on several key factors, including test experience, leadership qualities and previous captain’s references.
They then underwent a detailed evaluation process which included psychometric tests to assess the style of leadership, behavior and overall adjustment for the role. This was followed by structured interviews focused on the tactical approach, communication skills and alignment with team culture.
At the end of the selection process, Roston Chase was appointed captain, with Jomel Warrican appointed his assistant.
Shai Hope, who currently directs the West Indies of ODI and T20is, opted for running for the test captain, preferring to focus on his responsibilities in the shorter formats
Chase, which brings an experience of 49 tests and 86 limited internationals, succeeds Kraigg Brathwaite, who left the role in March 2025.
Speaking about the appointment, head coach Daren Sammy said: “I fully approve of this appointment. Our new captain won respect for his peers, understands the responsibility that is accompanied by the role and showed the leadership qualities that we need to advance this team”, “quoted by the ICC.
“I urge fans of the whole region to rally behind him-we build something special,” he added.
Chase’s first assignment as a test captain will be the three -game series against Australia in June, which will be one of the opening competitions for the new ICC World Test Championship.
