Aamir Khan and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani’s much-anticipated biopic Dadasaheb Phalke has seen a change in its production schedule. While the project was initially scheduled to start in January 2026, the creators are now planning to begin filming in late March 2026.

In September 2025, Mid-Day reported that the film was preparing to shoot early next year, with Khan reportedly moved to tears as he revisited key moments in Phalke’s life. However, plans have since changed as the actor-director duo decided to further refine the script before editing the film on set.
According to industry insiders, a new version of the script is currently in the works, one that matches Hirani and Khan’s creative vision while doing justice to the journey of Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, widely considered the father of Indian cinema. The intention, sources say, is to ensure the narrative resonates with contemporary audiences without compromising historical authenticity.
A source told Mid-Day, “Hirani and Aamir agree that the film needs to be emotionally contemporary while remaining rooted in history. The rewrite aims to fine-tune the balance between humor and sincerity. They want to ensure that the character arc reflects Phalke’s stature. The project is likely to be finalized by February and production will begin by the end of March.”
This development comes months after Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani announced their reunion for the third time, following historic collaborations such as 3 idiots And PK. The announcement sparked widespread anticipation across the industry. However, reports quickly emerged suggesting that the project had been temporarily put on hold due to creative issues.
Previously, reliable sources had stated Bollywood Hungama that Khan and Hirani were unhappy with earlier versions of the script. “Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani are perfection, and they were not happy with the script of the Dadasaheb Phalke biopic. Aamir felt that the script is too dry for today’s world audiences and lacks the humor that one would expect from their collaboration,” the source had said.
The source added, “After repeated rewrite sessions, the duo collectively decided to shelve the project. They believe that such an iconic personality like Dadasaheb Phalke deserves a script that is both moving and universally engaging. Until they reach this benchmark, they are in no hurry to rush the production of the film.”
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan is reportedly carefully evaluating his future plans. The actor is reportedly reading several scripts and is expected to announce his next film in the first quarter of 2026. “He is reading at least 20 scripts right now and will choose one of the shortlisted projects,” a source revealed.
Currently, Aamir is busy with the promotions of his upcoming film, Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, which is directed by Vir Das and is scheduled to release on January 16, 2026.
