More than three years after the set on the set which put the film on the world radar, the “rust” of Alec Baldwin arrived. At the end of 2021, during the initial production phase, director of photography Halyna Hutchins was killed when Baldwin accidentally unloaded a propeller gun which, according to him, had only empty towers. It is a tragedy that reshaped the conversation on security in the level of firearms. But in part because the Hutchins family benefits from the product generated by the film, it was officially published in theaters and in the digital markets.

Despite the very publicized nature of everything surrounding the production of the film, its theater debut was almost ignored. “Rust” won only $ 25,000 during his opening weekend, playing on 115 screens. This put it in the 27th in the national charts, just behind the documentary “Secret Mall Apartment”, which won $ 29,750 on only 39 screens, for an additional context. Marvel’s “Thunderbolts” have surpassed the graphics overall with $ 76 million.

Any speech on the box office or the financial performance of this film is delicate. There are many who probably believe that this film should never have seen the light of day, and they certainly have a leg on. However, as part of the colony with Baldwin, who is a film’s producer and co-scriptwriter, Hutchins’s husband, Matt Hutchins, has become an executive producer, with the production of “rust” authorized to be completed. Matt Hutchins and his son will benefit financially from all the profits to make the film.

At first, it seems that all the money will have to come from the income of the VOD. “Rust” is currently available via services such as Prime Video for rent for $ 6.99 or buy for $ 14.99. In all likelihood, anyone who is curious enough to look at him will make the comfort of the house.

Rust will rely on streaming and VOD for its audience, for better or for worst

Directed by Joel Souza, the film focuses on a 13-year-old boy who has to manage for himself and his younger brother after the death of their parents in Wyoming of the 1880s. He went to Mexico and connects with his long distant grandfather (Baldwin) after being condemned to hang for the accidental murder of a local breeder. During all this time, an American marshal and a determined bonus hunter are in pursuit.

A trailer for “Rust” made its online debut at the end of March. He arrived with little fanfare, but given the circumstances, it makes a lot of sense. Souza and the producers were in an extremely difficult position to have to finish and release this film despite the tragedy on the set. Souza was actually struck by the ball that killed Hutchins, the director also undergoing serious injuries.

Baldwin and several filmmakers have been the subject of various disputes in the years that followed. The investigation and the judicial procedures that followed revealed a breakdown negligence which finally led to the death of Hutchins. The Hannah GUTIERREZ-REED armor was found guilty of manslaughter and is currently serving a prison sentence. Baldwin was accused of manslaughter, but these charges were finally abandoned in December.

The film is now in the world and all those involved can try to move from this horrible tragedy. Even if the film had a more robust marketing campaign, it is easy to imagine that most people would not want to get involved with the “rust” in the light of what happened. It is a messed up, especially since the Hutchins family should benefit from the release. If the first numbers of the box office are an indication, this money will have to come from streaming income sources, for the better or for the worst.

We talked a bit about this in today’s episode of the Daily Podcast / Daily film:
