PIF now permanently follows Tiago Gabriel; Newcastle chiefs ‘appreciate him’

The PIF are now tracking an impressive Serie A defender, who Newcastle United bosses ‘like’, according to recent reports.

Howe admits he is not ‘in favor’ of changing Carabao Cup rules

As if facing Manchester City over two legs for a chance of reaching the final wasn’t tough enough, a rule change in the Carabao Cup is set to allow Antoine Semnyo to play for Pep Guardiola’s side. This is despite playing for Bournemouth earlier in the competition.

In previous years the winger would have been forced to miss what is a crucial match, but new EFL rule 6.4 now allows players to represent two clubs in the competition each season.

Having discovered the rule before Newcastle’s meeting with Man City, Eddie Howe told reporters: “Yes, it was good to find out the rule had changed after finding out they signed it.

“I have to say it’s a rule change that I probably wouldn’t support at the moment. But Antoine has had an incredible season. I’m a big admirer of him and he scored on his debut, so fair play to him. I think Man City have signed a very, very good player.”

It’s the type of big deal Newcastle would benefit from completing this month. The Magpies have a lot to sort out following an end-of-summer shopping trip and have already set their sights on Wesley Franca, according to recent reports.

Additionally, other potential summer targets like Tiago Gabriel are also emerging. According to TeamTalk’s Rudy Galetti, the PIF is now tracking Gabriel and Newcastle chiefs are ‘liking’ the young Lecce centre-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

“Strong” Gabriel could join forces with Thiaw

Newcastle deserve praise for welcoming Malick Thiaw this summer. He has been one of their most successful signings in recent years and is expected to lead their backline for years to come. But first he needs a long-term partner.

Harvey Barnes

Newcastle seek £69m-rated ‘powerhouse’ who could outperform Barnes

Newcastle United could sign an even bigger talent than Harvey Barnes.

On paper, the Magpies would love it to be Sven Botman. The Dutchman is certainly quite talented and is at the top of his game at 26 years old. Yet they can no longer ignore his long injury history.

They would also like it to be Fabian Schar or Dan Burn, but both are almost in their thirties. Neither are long-term options. This therefore opens the door for Gabriel, 21, who could potentially step in.

Described as a “strong on the ball” central defender by Como recruiter Ben Mattinson, Gabriel ticks plenty of boxes for those at St James’ Park, not least because he is 6’5. If Newcastle are looking for Thiaw’s partner, they may have just found him.
