Pakistan head coach sacked by Mohsin Naqvi ‘disappointed’ after World Cup disaster

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided not to extend the contract of women’s team head coach Muhammad Wasim following the team’s disappointing performance in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. The board is reportedly exploring the possibility of appointing a foreign coach to bring a fresh approach.
Pakistan had a forgettable campaign in the ODI World Cup, failing to register a single victory in the seven matches they played. The team suffered four defeats, while three matches were canceled due to rain. They finished seventh out of eight teams and could move further down if Bangladesh win their next match.

“PCB insiders revealed that chairman Mohsin Naqvi was unhappy with the team’s overall performance and Wasim’s failure to make visible improvements,” the report read.
Wasim was appointed head coach of the women’s team last year. Under his tenure, Pakistan lost the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup in the semi-finals to Sri Lanka and had just one win in four matches at the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.
PCB plans to hire foreign coach to revamp Pakistan women’s cricket
Muhammad Wasim came under scrutiny, largely due to the team’s stagnant batting performance, which was expected to improve under the leadership of a former international hitter. Pakistan’s batting has remained their weakest department in major tournaments.
According to PTI, several staff members described Wasim as difficult to approach and lacking in effective communication. His strained relationship and inability to spark progress reportedly contributed to the PCB’s decision not to renew his contract.
In response, the board is now considering appointing a foreign coach to bring new ideas and direction to the women’s team. An official announcement regarding the appointment is expected soon as the PCB looks to revamp its women’s cricket structure.
Pakistan’s ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 campaign ends winless
Pakistan’s Women’s ODI World Cup campaign has been plagued by inconsistencies, rain-related disruptions and a series of heavy defeats, leaving them without a single victory in the tournament.
The team opened their campaign with a seven-wicket defeat against Bangladesh, followed by an 88-run defeat against arch-rivals India. They showed some struggle against Australia, but Beth Mooney’s brilliant century, combined with a disciplined bowling performance, inflicted another defeat on Pakistan.
Pakistan came close to securing their first ever ODI victory against England, but persistent rains prevented the result. The weather continued to impact their campaign, with the key match against New Zealand abandoned without a single ball being bowled.
The team then suffered a heavy 150-run defeat against South Africa, and their final match against Sri Lanka was also cancelled, bringing a disappointing conclusion to their World Cup run.
As part of a compromise deal, Sri Lanka was chosen alongside India to host Pakistan’s matches at a neutral venue. India and Pakistan only face each other in international tournaments and on neutral ground.
