Olive Garden tests smaller menu items at 40% of restaurant locations

Darden Restaurants experiences smaller portions in Olive Garden, testing a “lighter entrances” menu in 40% of its locations, the company announced during its quarterly call on Thursday.
The new menu section, which offers smaller portions and a reduced price on seven of its existing entries, is an additional option for customers and “does not replace anything” on the menu of the Italian-American restaurant chain, a Restaurant spokesman for Darden told Fox Business in an email.

The reduced portions section includes the Olive Garden chicken, the Aubergines among a classic lasagna, five Ziti Al Forno cheeses, cheese ravioli, spaghetti and meatballs and Fettuccine Alfredo, according to Darden restaurants.

The lighter entrances is at the price between $ 12.99 and $ 13.99, although they vary according to the market, spokesperson said in Fox Business.

The initial customer response was “encouraging”, customers noting the 15% higher chain on affordability, Rick Cardenas, president and chief executive officer of Darden Restaurants, said Thursday’s winnings.

The guests also said that they were satisfied with the amount of food they received despite smaller portions, according to Cardenas.

“These items, available at dinner and all day during the weekend, always offer abundant portions and are delivered with the first endless course of Olive Garden of unlimited Grenacs and unlimited soup or salad,” said Cardenas. “… I have confidence in Olive Garden’s initiatives for the year, as well as their five -year roadmap to maintain growth and long -term success.”

Darden restaurants, based in Orlando, Florida, are also the parent company of restaurants, including Longhorn Steakhouse, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, Yard House and Chris Steak House from Ruth. The company’s shares fell by around 7% on Thursday after reporting mixed quarterly results.

Darden restaurants announced in June that it planned to open more Olive Garden and Longhorn Steakhouse restaurants. Earlier this year, Texas Roadhouse replaced Olive Garden as the best relaxed catering chain in America. Olive Garden had the title since 2018, but an resurgence of the popularity of Texas Roadhouse has pushed the relaxed steakhouse.
