Nottingham Forest’s top January target is a striker who looks like Wood

Nottingham Forest have a crucial transfer window ahead of them, especially given the perilous situation the team finds themselves in in the Premier League.
Sean Dyche’s side currently sit one place above the relegation zone, with the team’s lack of goals undoubtedly one of the biggest problems in the ranks.
The Reds have scored just 21 times in their first 21 outings, with only the lowest placed team, Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring fewer in the top flight to date.
Morgan Gibbs-White is currently the club’s top scorer in the league this campaign, with five goals, three more than any other striker in Dyche’s side.
As a result, a new number nine has become the Reds’ priority this window, with many players already appearing on their radar before the window closes.
Nottingham Forest make striker their main target
In recent weeks, Forest have been linked with a host of attacking talents, with Wolves star Jorgen Strand Larsen just one of the options being considered.
It has been reported that the Norway international is free to leave Molineux this winter, but only if an interested party shells out the £40million asking price for his signature.
However, Dyche’s men are not alone in their quest to land the 25-year-old, with Everton and Newcastle United both keen to strike a deal to land the talisman.
He is not the only player currently wanted by the hierarchy, with Olympiacos star Mehdi Taremi another player of interest before the end of the window.
According to The Athletic, the Reds have made the Iran international their main striker target this month, following his impressive debut in Greece, as evidenced by his tally of eight goals in 11 outings.
The report states that the 33-year-old could be considered as a short-term option until the end of the campaign, which could surprise supporters.
Why Taremi would be Dyche’s next Wood for Forest
Last season, striker Chris Wood had a huge impact on Forest’s ability to win European football for the first time in 30 years, as evidenced by his incredible goal tally.
The New Zealand international scored a total of 20 Premier League goals in the 2024/25 season, subsequently breaking the club’s goalscoring record in the English top flight.
However, the 34-year-old has struggled to make the same impact this time around, making just eight league appearances and scoring twice due to constant injury problems.
He has not appeared since mid-October, with boss Dyche unable to use the striker in his plans, just as he had during their previous spell together at Burnley.
Wood’s target man style is the exact profile the manager craves in his 4-2-3-1 system, with Taremi potentially capable of becoming his next version of striker should he join.
The Iranian is an experienced option, as evidenced by his 182 appearances for Porto, with the talisman able to flourish under the manager at the City Ground.
Taremi, dubbed ‘exceptional’ by Alessandro Raffa, has scored eight times, while boasting a 47% shot on target accuracy rate so far this campaign.

Such numbers demonstrate his clinical nature in front of goal, something the Reds have struggled with – as evidenced by their meager goal tally in 2025/26.
The Olympiacos star has also recorded a total of 8.8 touches in the opposition box per 90 this campaign, subsequently displaying Wood’s poacher-like nature under Dyche previously.
However, his hold-up play could make him a viable option for the club this winter, with Taremi winning 7.1 duels per 90 this season, including 3.6 aerials.
Such numbers could make him the perfect option in Dyche’s system, with his total of 1.5 chances created also allowing the attackers around him in the East Midlands to improve their own scores.
It is unknown if the move will be finalized this winter, but it is safe to say that this move is not popular with fans, especially after the departure of Arnaud Kalimuendo.
However, if the Iranian can replicate such numbers at the City Ground, he could prove to be the perfect short-term solution to keep the club in the Premier League at the end of May.
