Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi chose the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their new political home after having broken their respective parties – the Democratic Party of Peoples (PDP) and the Labor Party (LP).
It is one of the greatest upheavals of Nigerian policy since the end of the military regime in 1999.
Certain political heavyweights of the Party Progressive Congress (APC) of Tinubu also threw their weight behind the formation.
Why did they unite their strengths?
The AdC’s announcement is the culmination of a series of talks between the leaders to set up a united front in the 2027 elections, rather than dividing their vote.
Tinubu won the 2023 elections with only 37%of the votes after opposition supporters were divided between Abubakar who obtained 29%, and OBI with 25%.
Obi had broken the PDP after the party chose Abubakar as a presidential candidate.
During the ADC unveiling, the acting president David Mark said that it was an attempt to save the country’s democracy and prevent Nigeria from becoming a single party.
The PDP and the LP also fight against internal crises which, according to some, have been caused by external forces.
Analyst Shehu Iliyasu said that Aubakar and Obi learn the lessons in the last elections.
“The two Atiku [Abubakar] And Obi said they were approaching so close in 2023 and might have won on a common ticket so that they want to change their error by working together this time, “he told the BBC.
What are the main characters in the ADC?

Although there is a long way to go before the candidates are officially announced, political commentators predict that Abubakar, 78, will have another chance for the presidency – that would be his fifth attempt – with the former governor of Anambra Obi, 63, as a choice of vice -president.
The other political heavyweights of the coalition include the former president of the Senate, David Mark, who, like Atiku, leaves the PDP, the former ally of Tinubu transformed the enemy Nasir El-Rofai and the powerful minister during the last Rotimi Amaechi dispensation.
What are their chances in 2027?
Analyst Ben Kenneth says he thinks that the coalition is likely to defeat Tinubu than the last time.
“If you look at what Atiku and Obi have obtained the last elections, it is clear to see that they would have won by assuming that they worked together, so it was a good thing that they realized that they needed each other,” he noted.
However, another Sani Hamisu analyst believes that Tinubu, 73, has a better chance now than in 2023.
“In Nigeria and Africa, when a chef is in office looking for a second term, he is barely losing, it is very rare and that is why I think Tinubu has a better chance now than when he was not in office in 2019,” he said.
Is the ruling party worried?
The ruling party says that he is not disturbed at all by the coalition which he does not consider as a real threat.
The acting president Ali Bukar Dalori told BBC Haus, that the coalition would have no impact on the APC.
“No one talks about a coalition except in Abuja. Even in Abuja, they are in a hotel, and when they are defeated in the elections, they will leave the country,” he said.
What do the main political parties say?
The country’s largest opposition party, the PDP had since excluded to join the coalition, preferring to face the APC by itself.
The Labor Party also called on his supporters to remain concentrated and resolved behind the party, denying any project to join a coalition.
