Newly opened bridge partially collapses in China

A recently opened bridge in China’s southwest Sichuan province has partially collapsed, creating a huge plume of dust.

Authorities closed the 758-meter-long Hongqi Bridge on Monday after cracks appeared on nearby slopes and roads.

By Tuesday afternoon, conditions on the mountainside deteriorated, causing landslides that caused part of the bridge to collapse, officials added.

No casualties have been reported.

Construction of the bridge was completed earlier this year, according to a social media post from contractors Sichuan Road and Bridge Group.
