Newcastle midfielder miss the rest of the season

Jelinton is unlikely to play for Newcastle this season after having made a knee injury.

The 28-year-old midfielder missed the victory over Ipswich last weekend and returned home to Brazil for rest and recovery.

Upon entering the weekend in Brighton, the Magpies are in third place in the Premier League and seem good for a return to the Champions League.

Manager Eddie Howe said: “With Joe, you never governs him. It is so motivated to try to come back.

“We asked for a specialized opinion, and the opinion was that it did not matter but he needed a period of rest, so he is now in Brazil.

“We will wait to see if we can recover it before the end of the season, but the probability is probably not.”

Lewis Miley, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock are among the players in the running to replace Jelinton in the midfield.

Howe had positive news for injuries because defender Sven Botman is able to appear after his return from the injury last weekend.

“Yeah, he went (well),” said the manager. “He trained well this week, looks good and therefore a big positive to find him.”
