Netflix paid for an absurd money for Happy Gilmore 2

Almost 30 years after the original film helped to cement Adam Sandler as a cinematographic comedy superstar, “Happy Gilmore 2” benefits from a fairly healthy race on Netflix. Released in July, the continuation has been at the top in the 10 best tracks in streamer since its release, and he even obtained the highest number of film viewers in the history of the 10 best top 10 classification (via The Wrap). This would apparently make it an automatic success. However, the film’s budget was recently revealed, and it adds a fairly heavy asterisk to the effort.
According to New Jersey Business Magazine, Netflix spent $ 152.5 million on production, which was filmed in New Jersey. We previously thought that the comedy of director Kyle Newacheck was a lot, much cheaper. It is an eye fusion number, but it is also the one that requires a lot of context before we can even start to respond to the whole “worth it” of the conversation.
The figure comes from the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television commission and, more importantly, “Happy Gilmore 2” qualified for the credit program for the taxes and digital media of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. These tax credit programs are commonly used by governments to attract cinematographic production. This is why Marvel Studios has shot many projects (such as “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania”) in the United Kingdom in recent times. More specifically, the NJEDA needs specific figures to give Netflix the tax credit earned, so that the figure of $ 152.5 million is authentic.
Without entering the ins and outs of the tax credit system for productions, it essentially helps studios to compensate for costs. According to NJ.GOV, the State offers eligible productions between 30% and 35%. If the long -awaited and starred Sandler’s long -awaited suite, could compensate for this 30%budget, this would drop at around $ 107 million. If it was closer to 35%, this number drops to around $ 99 million. It also does not take into account marketing costs, and it does not represent money that Netflix spent outside New Jersey for production.
HAPPY GILMORE 2 Was it worth it? Streaming, everything is relative
Even on the generous and bottom of the spectrum, $ 100 million is a huge sum of money to spend on a large comedy, especially when we consider that the original “Happy Gilmore” costs only $ 12 million to be won. Even adjusted for inflation, it would only cost about 25 million dollars in today’s dollars. But Netflix generated $ 37.5 billion in income last year, so he has the money to spend. However, we must now return to the question: was it worth it?
Streaming, it’s always a complicated question because the only metric we really have to do is the viewer. To date, “Happy Gilmore 2” has spent four weeks in the world’s top 10 streamer, exceeding 100 million hours of visualization, despite many criticisms. It is not very close to the Top 10 of Netflix, which would require “Damsel” (253 million hours). As we speak, “Kpop Demon Hunters” is about to become the most watched film in Netflix with much less star power on a similar investment.
But Sandler prospered on Netflix, with his films with the service very well. As the comedies had trouble staying relevant to the box office, the actor found a house streaming. To this end, stars like Sandler would normally obtain a box office cup on a theatrical film. But as Netflix and other streamers do not pay much through fees, this means that everyone must be paid in advance, which considerably swells the cost. Not only Sandler, but everyone in the massive distribution of the suite, including everyone, from Benny Safdie to Pro Golfer John Daly. It does not come cheap.
The only ones who can really tell us if it was worth it would be the leaders of Netflix. What we can say, however, is that this investment has at least resulted in great success, which is never guaranteed. Just watch “Heart of Stone”, a badly examined Gal Gadot Netflix action film (the one that many people have probably never heard of) that would have cost $ 150 million. Or Netflix bets just as expensive as “red notice” and “the gray man”, who have not yet received the rest which has been promised at a given moment. Seen through this objective, Netflix would almost certainly call it a success, despite the breathtaking price.
“Happy Gilmore 2” is now streaming on Netflix.
