Microsoft software license terms harm competition in the Cloud Computing market, a survey commissioned by the British antitrust regulator has noted, which increases the costs of its major technological rivals.
The conclusion of an independent competition panel and the authority markets said Thursday that the British cloud market “does not work well” and recommended that the agency imposed driving requirements in Microsoft and Amazon to increase competition.
On Wednesday, Microsoft declared a flambé of profits, stimulated by its unit Azure Cloud Computing, whose world income increased by 34% for a record of $ 75 billion from the year to June.
The CMA panel has revealed that the cloud market is very concentrated, with Amazon Web Services and Azure from Microsoft, commanding up to 40% of customer expenses in the United Kingdom, with Google dragging in a distant third place.
But he distinguished the “significant market power” of Microsoft, motivated by the way he invoices in Amazon and Google to use his software, saying that he “has a negative impact” of market competitiveness.
The CMA will now examine the opportunity to open a survey on Microsoft and Amazon in order to give them the so-called “Strategic Market Statute”, which would lead to certain driving requirements, using its new digital powers that have entered into force this year.
However, all SMS probe would not start until 2026 after the CMA said last month that it would focus on its current surveys on Google and Apple on research and mobile ecosystems this year.
