Meta under Spanish investigation over alleged Android data breaches

The Spanish government has officially announced an investigation into Meta for possible violations of the privacy of its Facebook and Instagram users via a hidden tracking mechanism on Android devices.

The investigation stems from international research which revealed that Meta used a mechanism to track the web activity of users of Android devices.

Sanchez said in a statement: “In Spain, the law is above any algorithm or any big technological platform and the violation of our rights will suffer the consequences. »

During this time, Meta violated several European Union security and privacy laws, including the General Data Protection Regulation.

Previously, Meta faced a €798 million fine in 2024 for anticompetitive practices related to Facebook Marketplace.

The company was accused of non-compliance with the DMA in its opt-in advertising tool.

The recent announcement of a further investigation into Meta represents a significant escalation of ongoing problems with big tech, and government action has been taken based on specific technical advice.

Nonetheless, it is a crucial step to execute a decision in a practical manner rather than relying solely on legal department statements.
