Children’s safety groups file an FTC complaint against Apple on the App Store

Apple will invest $ 100 billion in the United States, CEO, Tim Cook, announced to the White House, bringing its total commitment to $ 600 billion.
First on Fox: A coalition of children’s security groups asked the Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday investigating Apple, alleging that the technology giant has engaged in misleading practices via its app store which endanger the children.
The Digital Childhood Institute, a non -profit organization including several advocacy groups, argued that Apple knowingly marketed certain applications as safe for minors when they are not, have not applied the necessary parental controls and allowed applications to collect sensitive children.
Digital Childhood Institute exhibited its allegations in a complaint, obtained by Fox News Digital, which it filed with the FTC on Tuesday morning, marking the first major action of the coalition since its training.
The coalition also accused Apple of generalized violations of the law on the protection of online privacy of children and of violating a 2014 consent decree with the FTC which prevented Apple from authorizing certain purchases integrated by minors.

“For too long, families have remained helpless because technological companies have exploited vulnerable children,” said the complaint. “Apple has normalized practices that would never be tolerated in the world of brick and mortar.”
Fox News Digital contacted the FTC and Apple to comment.

The coalition said in its complaint that a pressure campaign of several years which included concerns with regard to Congress hearings and the introduction of new legislation has been ineffective to cause a change in technology giant.
Digital Childhood Institute said, for example, that applications like Snapchat, X, Bluesky, Tiktok and Roblox all contain easy access to mature and explicit materials, but are marketed in the Apple App Store as adapted to any person aged 12 and over. Roblox faced his own set of proceedings alleging that it is a refuge for children’s predators, but Roblox denied these claims, saying that his security is his absolute priority.

The coalition has alleged Apple profits to allow better access to these applications.
The complaint also alleys that Apple allows minors to conclude binding service agreements that allow applications to collect sensitive data from young users, such as location and photos, without parental involvement.
Apple, which reported more than $ 10 billion in profits from the App Store in 2024, said its platform was a “safe and confidence place” for families. But children’s safety defenders who have made the FTC complaint claim that the recent safety updates of the technological society are largely cosmetic and do not solve deeper problems.

The president of Digital Childhood Institute, Melissa McKay, said in a statement that the submission of a complaint to the FTC was the next logical step.
“For years, lawyers have fought to hold Apple responsible for its security failures. Repeated hearings of the Congress, national movements, resolutions and letters have brought little change, we therefore had no choice but to file official complaints and write legislation on the responsibility of the App Store,” said McKay. “Apple’s decade of deception is over.”
