What’s happening in Cordelia’s will reading Maxton Hall – The World Between Us season 2 episode 6

The reading of Cordelia’s will represents a pivotal moment in the show’s current season and sets in motion the lengths Mortimer Beaufort is willing to go to to maintain power over his estate. James, Lydia, and Ophelia all believed that Cordelia would leave everything to her children, and not to Mortimer, from whom she was separated at the time of her death.
However, they are shocked to learn that Mortimer has received the entire estate. The immediate response from Ophelia and the twins is one of doubt, as Cordelia would never have decided to leave the estate to Mortimer, having repeatedly declared her disappointment in him before she died. Mortimer’s legacy strengthens his influence and power, leaving his children feeling betrayed.

Why does Mortimer go after Ruby and her family? Maxton Hall – The World Between Us season 2 episode 6
Mortimer’s behavior towards Ruby and her family is motivated by a desire for revenge and a need to control others. Following his inability to convince James and Lydia to remain loyal to him, he takes out his frustration on the individual he perceives as a symbolic threat to his authority: Ruby.
Her suspension is just a way for Mortimer to get revenge on her. He also dismantles Ruby’s financial security by buying out her parents’ bakery, cutting off their source of income and leaving them without stability. Mortimer’s actions towards her are motivated by the need to destroy her to regain the power and control he believes he once had over James and Lydia.
