Mark Zuckerberg does not want Meta to lead into the field of artificial intelligence. He wants to build the AI that leads you.
In a memo to the employees targeted by Gizmodo on June 30, the Meta CEO announced the creation of Meta Superintelligence Labs, a major reorganization of the efforts of the company’s AI as part of a single ambitious objective: the delivery of personal superintendent to all.
Forget the chatbots. Zuckerberg’s vision is much larger. He bet that in a few years, AI will not only answer your questions or will write your emails. It will manage your schedule, anticipate your needs, direct your home, help you make decisions and maybe even guide your career. Call that life as a service, powered by Meta.
“As the pace of AI’s progress is accelerating, the development of superintendent is in sight,” wrote Zuckerberg. “It will be the beginning of a new era for humanity, and I am fully determined to do what it takes in Meta to show the way.”

This decision is considered a direct challenge for competitors. “The launch of Meta Superitelligence Labs is not only an announcement; it is a declaration: Meta will not be satisfied with second place in AI,” commented Alon Yamin, co-founder and CEO of the Plagiat Copyleaks plagiarism platform. He added: “Meta and Mark clearly see this as a moment of brand or rupture for the leadership of AI.”
Bloomberg reported the memo earlier on Monday. A Meta spokesperson has since confirmed its content to Gizmodo.
To get there, Zuckerberg brings together a kind of AI Avengers team. The new hires represent a great talented coup:
- Alexandr Wang, the founder of the AI scale and one of the most connected operators in the AI supply chain, joins as a new META AI chief.
- Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub and an Elite IA investor, arrives on board to manage AI products and applied research.
- Shengjia Zhao, one of the co-creators of GPT-4, recently left Openai to join the new Meta laboratory.
These are hires of power, people with reputation to build rapid and reflection years before the market. Zuckerberg says that more big names are on the way.
Meta already has a solid base with Llama, her open source family of large -language models. The latest versions feed Meta AI, which, according to the company, reaches more than a billion monthly users on Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp.
But it was just the first phase.
Zuckerberg now wants to build a new generation of models capable of what initiates call frontier performance. But that also raises urgent questions. Who controls this intelligence? What does it prioritize? What happens when a machine knows your desires better than you and this machine works for a company?
Zuckerberg thinks that Meta can be reliable to build and provide overintelligence to the masses. But the next chapter of the AI will not concern smart applications or productivity hacks. It will be a battle on which will be able to program the brain that program you.
