Celtic now track Maeda replacement who Jamie Carragher calls ‘special’

Celtic are now reportedly tracking Evan Ferguson ahead of a potential 2026 move as the Brighton & Hove Albion striker continues to struggle on loan at AS Roma.
Celtic have faced several problems so far this season, but their frontline has been their biggest problem. Parkhead Chiefs failed to replace the impact of Nicolas Kuhn this summer and part of the reason Brendan Rodgers resigned was lack of investment. That left them adrift of shock leaders Hearts in the Scottish Premiership and in search of a new manager.
Things are unlikely to get easier for the Hoops anytime soon. Recent reports have claimed that Daizen Maeda is now looking to leave the club in the January transfer window and that Premier League sides are interested.
The Japan international could also force Celtic’s hand this time around, having revealed to reporters earlier this season that he was denied an exit during the summer transfer window.
“I had received an offer and told the club I wanted to take the next step, but Celtic hadn’t been able to bring in any good reinforcements, so in the end they told me they couldn’t let me go.
“There were some things that I had personally agreed to, so I wanted to challenge myself. My entry into the national team was delayed and I spoke to Celtic until the last day, but it didn’t work out.”
Whether this is the reason for Maeda’s poor form is the question Celtic will ask themselves. The striker scored 33 goals in all competitions last season, but has only managed four in the current campaign so far.
If his current struggles continue, it might be best for all parties to move on and Celtic to focus on players like Ferguson.
Celtic now follow Evan Ferguson
According to Graeme Bailey, via 67 Hail Hail, Celtic are now following Ferguson and could move again in 2026, with Roma looking to cut short his loan spell and send him back to Brighton in January.
It has been a frustrating year for the young striker. There is no denying that he has become unwanted in Italy after failing to score once in 10 appearances. If anyone needs a next move to practice, it’s Ferguson.
The big question is whether Celtic are that move. The Irishman is still only 21 years old and still full of potential. If the right deal comes along, the Bhoys should take a chance on Ferguson in the hope that both sides resolve their respective issues.
It’s also worth noting that it wasn’t long ago that Ferguson found himself at the center of Jamie Carragher’s praise.
The Liverpool legend called the striker “special” while also praising Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, saying: “I think the boy he’s got up front, I think he’s pretty special. He’s only going to get better with him as manager.”
