At the time, Joanna studied at the University of Otterbein neighboring Westerville, Ohio. She would become a WBNS-Channel 10 journalist in Columbus before she and Marcus started their family together.
Marcus was drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL draft by the Bears of Chicago – and would later sign the training teams of Buffalo Bills and Texans of Houston the same year – although he had never seen any NFL play action.

His coach career began as a graduate assistant to Ohio State before seeing stops at Kent State University, Purdue University and the University of Cincinnati. Marcus was appointed head coach of Notre Dame in December 2021.
Along the way, Joanna was there for all this – including the Freemans becoming the parents of six children together: son Vinny17 years old, girl His own12 years old, son Gino11 years old, son Nico9 years old, girl Corsair7 years old, and son Rocco6.

2007
Marcus and Freeman welcomed their first child, son Vinny. Now senior in Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, Vinny plays the security of the school football team, he is also an accomplished wrestler, announcing his commitment to Cornell University in April 2025.
2010
The couple married only a few months before the start of the Freeman coach course as assistant to their Alma Mater state, Ohio.
2012
Marcus and Joanna welcomed their first daughter, His ownWhile Marcus was the coach of the seconds at the Kent State University.
2013
The couple’s second son, Ginowas born while Marcus was coach of the seconds at Purdue University.
In July 2018, Marcus already made Gino and Vinny follow on his traces. “This is officially the football season for the Freeman,” said Marcus via Instagram, showing the brothers wearing football helmets and posing with their father.
2015
Marcus and Joanna welcomed their son, NicoWhile Marcus still worked in Purdue. He would become the defensive coordinator of the University of Cincinnati in 2017.
“Happy 4th birthday to our Nico!” Marcus shared via Instagram in 2019, showing a photo of a birthday celebration which included the cincinnati head coach then Luke Fickell.
2017
Freemans welcomed their second daughter, Corsairin the world.
In a photo shared by Marcus via Instagram, the four brothers and sisters of Capri smiled and posed with their little sister shortly after his birth.
“Welcome to this world and our Capri family !!” Marcus wrote.
2018
The sixth baby of Marcus and Joanna, son Nicowas born shortly before the holidays.
“Merry Christmas of the Freeman crew,” shared Marcus via Instagram in December 2018, showing all his family smiling in front of a fireplace full.
2020
Marcus celebrated the couple’s 10th wedding anniversary with a slideshow of images of their lives together.
“Celebrating 10 years to be married to the love of my life and the glue to the Freeman family”, ” Marcus wrote via Instagram. “Happy Birthday Jo!”
2021
The whole Freeman family was on site when Marcus signed a contract to become the 30th head coach in the history of Notre Dame.
“My family and I want to thank everyone for their overwhelming support,” wrote Marcus via Instagram. “It’s a special community and we are fortunate to be part of it. To my guys – let’s go this victory! Go Irish! “
2023
Marcus celebrated Mother’s Day with a photo of Joanna and his mother, Chong Freeman.

2025
Joanna and the six children celebrated on the ground with Marcus after Notre Dame defeated Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, which earned them a trip to the semi-finals of the play football playoffs.
2025
Marcus and Joanna took their boys to discover the Royal Rumble Royal 2025 in Indianapolis.
The family had seats by the ring for the show, which took place at the Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL. During the event, the Freemans were shown on massive video screens inside, which attracted a warm reaction from the more than 70,000 fans present.
2025
During an interview Ryan Clark On “The Pivot Podcast” in August, Marcus was asked about his beautiful appearance and how they “became a large part of Marcus Freeman’s production”.
“Dude, I’m going to tell you what,” said Marcus laughing. “I try to stay far from that as much as possible, do you know what I mean?” There will not be a good answer for this question. I will tell you what, I just have to try to keep my wife happy. That’s it. I’m just trying to keep my wife happy. “
