India’s Shreyas Iyer released from hospital after spleen injury in Sydney

Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital after being treated for a lacerated spleen suffered during the third one-day international against Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Saturday.
Iyer, 30, was injured last week while trying to brush off Alex Carey, clinging to his side after falling to the turf. The BBCI said he suffered a blunt abdominal injury that caused a laceration of the spleen with internal bleeding, a condition described by Indian media as life-threatening.
“The injury was quickly identified and the bleeding was immediately stopped following a minor intervention. He was provided with appropriate medical care,” the BCCI said in a statement.
“The BCCI medical team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are satisfied with his recovery and he was released from hospital today.”
Iyer will remain in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return home once cleared to fly.
“We spoke to him,” Twenty20 captain Suryakumar Yadav told reporters last week ahead of India’s five-match Twenty20 series against Australia.
“When we learned about his injury, I called him. Then I realized Shreyas didn’t have his phone with him and I called our physio, Kamlesh Jain, who told us he was stable.
“He looks good (now). We’ve been in contact for two days, he’s responding. If he’s able to answer the phone, then he’s stable.”
