Manchester United are reportedly a possible candidate to sign Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski when he becomes a free agent next summer.
The veteran Polish striker remains a key player for Barca at the moment, but it appears he may not benefit from an extension beyond this season as he will be 38 at the start of the next campaign.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick may be understandably concerned about Lewandowski’s ability to continue playing in his high-energy, high-pressing system at this stage.
As a result, it seems possible that the former Bayern Munich player could be available for free, with Man United linked as a possible destination.
Manchester United linked with Robert Lewandowski on free transfer
According to the Daily Star, Man Utd could be interested in signing Lewandowski when his contract expires.
The Red Devils have notably tried to recruit the Polish international before, but this dates back to the time when Sir Alex Ferguson was at the head of the club.
Lewandowski has spoken publicly about this transfer saga, admitting that he said yes to the move to Old Trafford, but that his former club, Borussia Dortmund, blocked it at the time.
Robert Lewandowski transfer talks don’t seem so convincing
Overall, the Daily Star report appears to be speculation more than anything else – it’s unclear whether United are actually seriously considering Lewandowski now.
Rather, it appears that the Daily Star is putting two stories together: Lewandowski’s free availability next summer and United’s past interest.
Yet this interest is over a decade old, so it doesn’t seem that relevant at the moment, and one imagines MUFC would also have concerns about Lewandowski’s age.
The 37-year-old is still a fantastic striker, but it would be a gamble to bring him to a competitive league like the Premier League at this age, so the club will surely focus on younger players instead.
