Maher says the Constitution becomes like the Bible, a “sacred text” that no one reads

Comedian Bill Maher suggested the U.S. Constitution was becoming like the Bible on Friday’s “Real Time,” saying “nobody actually reads it.”
“Is the Constitution still real or is it just a vibe? Now the Supreme Court has to decide: Are you going to be democracy’s last line of defense? Or is the Constitution now really, let’s be honest, just like the Bible, just an old sacred text that everyone names reverently, but that no one actually reads or even feels bad about ignoring. I mean, that’s what we do with the Bible, right? We ignore simply things while claiming it to be the greatest book of all time, even devotees don’t take it literally,” the HBO host said.
Maher took aim at President Donald Trump’s use of tariffs since taking office, while arguing that they have been effective in some ways, he said, “completely ignoring the Constitution is too high a price.”
The comedian said conservatives love carrying pocket Constitutions, comparing them to “iPhone user contracts written in parchment.”

BEN SHAPIRO AND BILL MAHER Clash OVER MORALITY AND THE BIBLE
“If you say you like this stuff, but you don’t obey it, you’ve never read it and you don’t even care what’s in it, it’s not the law anymore. It’s just another Bible,” said Maher, a well-known atheist.
On Friday’s “Real Time,” Maher also criticized media coverage of Trump’s ballroom construction.
“Ballroom, I don’t care. I really don’t care,” Maher said. “I was reading, it shows you how the media is. Everything is always on one side or the other. When [Trump] I first mentioned it, it was just, “Oh, my God, he’s desecrating the White House.” » Then I finally read: ‘Oh, well, they’ve already done some stupid shit at the White House.'”
“It’s just a building, I think,” he added.

In addition to criticizing media coverage “on one side or the other” of the renovation, Maher suggested that the ballroom might actually be a profitable investment, given that state dinners are currently held “under a tent.”

“Also, I realized after reading from others that we don’t have room for state dinners,” he said. “They’re doing it in a tent! This is America! So do I care if he’s doing this in the White House? I really don’t care.”
Maher also emphasized the fact that the ballroom is funded by “private money” and is not subsidized by American taxpayer dollars.
