Liverpool goal should have stood, says Slot

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says his side should have equalized in their 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.
Erling Haaland had given City the lead before Virgil van Dijk headed in from a corner to bring the champions level.
But the goal was ruled out, with left-back Andy Robertson judged to be in an offside position when the ball hit the net.
“I think it’s obvious and clear that a wrong decision was made,” Slot told Sky Sports.
“He (Robertson) didn’t interfere at all with what the goalkeeper could do. Immediately after the match someone showed me a goal that the same referee had allowed for City against Wolves last season.”
Despite his frustrations, Slot couldn’t complain about the result.
“It was a very difficult first half for us. They pressed us very high, we suffered a lot in the first half. It was obvious that they were better than us,” he added.
“You hope you can get to the end of the half with a score of 1-0, and then there were five to ten minutes that had an influence: instead of going to 1-1, it went to 2-0.
“But it could have influenced the match in a positive way for us because we were so poor in the first half.”
Asked about defending his title, Slot said: “Last season, when we were eight points ahead, we never felt like it was already done, but as Liverpool manager at that time, I don’t think I should talk about the number one position.”
City boss Pep Guardiola celebrated his 1,000th game with a comprehensive victory but thanked the players for the success.
“My players gave me a great gift with this performance against the champions,” he said.
“We had to perform well and a lot of good things happened, they all played at the highest level.
“Defensively it was really good. We know their threat at the back with Mo (Salah) and the quality of (Dominik) Szoboszlai and (Florian) Wirtz, and we have incredible energy with our people. Playing at home and winning is good for the international break.
“Gigi (Donnarumma) made the saves we needed, the two full-backs were exceptional. The midfielders gave us a lot of passing and control.
“Of course, the threat of Jeremy (Doku) was exceptional alongside Erling (Haaland).”
