Shots fired, crowd flees during reunion celebration
The shooting happened shortly before 9:30 p.m. near the school’s International Cultural Center after the football game, where crowds had gathered for festivities. Chester County Prosecutor Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe described the scene as follows: “chaotic“, with people fleeing in all directions and some being trampled in panic. While several gunshot victims were rushed to hospitals in neighboring Delaware, authorities have not released details on the condition of the six injured. Additionally, one person carrying a gun was arrested. However, investigators are still trying to determine whether more than one shooter was involved.
From surge to terror in seconds
Lincoln University, located about 55 miles west of Philadelphia and known as the nation’s first historically black degree-granting university, is grappling with the shock of violence interrupting what should have been a joyous event. Police Chief Marc Partee expressed his deep regret, saying:
“Homecoming – when individuals come back, give back to their alma mater and experience the fond memories of their time at Lincoln University… This was interrupted by gunfire that should not have happened. »
Witnesses remember loud music playing as the crowd celebrated before gunshots rang out. But eventually, students and alumni rushed for cover when police and firefighters arrived to secure the scene.
Lincoln part of disturbing nationwide shooting trend
The shooting is part of a disturbing trend of violence surrounding college celebrations across the country this season. Similar incidents have recently occurred at Howard University, Alabama State and Tuskegee-Morehouse games, while Mississippi has seen several deadly shootings linked to high school football events. So far this year, there have been at least 353 mass shootings in the United States, leaving more than 300 people dead and more than 1,600 injured, according to the Gun Violence Archive. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the Lincoln University shooting to contact the FBI as the investigation continues.
