Lawsuit filed against Resorts World by high-stakes gambler

A lawsuit was filed this week in Nevada by a high-stakes gambler and businessman alleging violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act against executives at Resorts World Las Vegas.

Gambler Robert (RJ) Cipriani and businessman James Russell have filed a lawsuit, which makes allegations against former and current company executives, including former hotel president Scott Sibella and Las Vegas attorney David Chesnoff, among others.

The complaint begins by asserting that since opening in 2021, “Resorts World has proven beyond dispute that it is unfit and incapable of operating a casino and resort in compliance with the law.”

He continues to mention the historic $10.5 million fine, which was issued earlier this year by the Nevada Gaming Commission. The casino was sanctioned following alleged anti-money laundering failings, with the Gaming Control Board approving the financial sanction by a unanimous 4-0 vote.

Number of people named in the trial

“As set forth herein, Genting Berhad and Resorts World adopted a deliberate business strategy – based on ignorance of regulatory and legal restrictions – to maximize revenue by welcoming criminals to Resorts World to launder their illicit proceeds,” the lawsuit claims.

A number of people are named in the complaint, and this is the second time Robert Cipriani has filed a complaint against Sibella and Resorts World, the other dating back to last year.

According to the publication Nevada Current, a Resorts World spokesperson said via email Thursday, “We generally do not comment on pending litigation, but this lawsuit rehashes old issues and is another attempt to bring negative attention to Resorts World Las Vegas and seek some form of compensation.” »

“We will vigorously defend ourselves against this unfounded action,” continues the spokesperson. ReadWrite requested comment and confirmed the statement.
