For anyone scratching their heads and wondering how Laila Ali and Claressa Shields got here, don’t worry: Laila explained it all in a series of videos. At this point, she should have called it tea time, because of the way the facts are spilling over. Phew!
Laila shared that she first met Claressa in 2012, when Claressa was invited on stage to stand with her as she presented her father, Muhammad Ali, with his Medal of Freedom. From then on, Shields stayed in touch, even warning Laila whenever she had fights coming up. Laila also mentioned that she interviewed Claressa while she was hosting CBS’ “We Need To Talk,” a female-led sports commentary show.
But things started to deteriorate over the years. Laila posted snippets of Claressa’s past comments – including a recent “Million Dollaz Worth Of Game” interview where Claressa called her “just the daughter of Muhammad Ali.” Laila admitted that she didn’t expect Claressa to turn on her like that and explained that she thought Claressa had been working overtime to discredit her career and smear her name.
“At the time, I wasn’t aware of her confrontational, vindictive and malicious nature. I know those are strong words, but they fit! She saw me as the face of women’s boxing and she told me she wanted me in. And ever since, she’s been on a mission to ruin my reputation,” Laila said in a clip recently shared on Instagram.

So how did things go from 0 to 100 and hit $15 million for a potential fight? Laila believes it all started after her 2018 interview on Power 105.1’s “The Breakfast Club.” When asked by the hosts if she would ever return to the ring against a hot competitor at that time, Laila responded: “I don’t think there’s anyone out there for me right now who would give me a good challenge.” However, she gave Claressa her flowers and said she was doing her thing. In Chile, at this point, fans are waiting to see Laila Ali and Claressa Shields bring it all on the field. But is it going to happen? There is still no decision on this. Claressa didn’t back down, however; she’s been taking shots at Laila since she said they’d need $15 million to face each other in the ring. Well, in August, Shields told TMZ that she thought Laila didn’t apply pressure after she got the money because Laila was “scared.”
“I thought she was about all this talk. She wanted $15 million. I went and got the $15 million. And now it’s all this backtracking. So, you know, kudos to her for everything she’s doing. But I’m moving on with my career,” Shields said at the time.
