Krysten Ritter’s Thriller 2025 Starring Kiernan Shipka Is a Hidden Gem on Netflix

“Stone Cold Fox” didn’t get much hype when it debuted in 2025, but now the action thriller has hit Netflix and is already enjoying a nice little boost. If you’re in the mood for some 80s action with a strong emphasis on female badassery, then you too should check out the movie about the king of streamers. Hell, it’s worth the watch just for co-stars Kiernan Shipka and Krysten Ritter, who are great together in this underrated gem.
“Stone Cold Fox” was co-written and directed by Sophie Tabet. It is the first feature film from the French-Lebanese American filmmaker, who told New Director’s Showcase in 2023 that she wanted to make “a genre shift: hard-hitting, pulpy, queer stories told with a habibi twist.” This should give you a good idea of what to expect from his very first film.
Ritter, who gained attention for her role as Jane Margolis in “Breaking Bad,” will soon return as former Defenders member Jessica Jones in “Daredevil: Born Again” season 2. Before then, though, we can all prepare for her return as Jones with “Stone Cold Fox,” even though she’s far from the hero of this revenge thriller.
She stars alongside Kiernan Shipka, who after playing Sabrina Spellman in Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” appeared in the Back to the Future-style slasher comedy “Totally Killer.” Otherwise, she had fairly minor roles in 2024’s “Twisters” and Osgood Perkins’ “Longlegs” — arguably the most terrifying horror of 2024. In “Stone Cold Fox,” however, Shipka is front and center.
Stone Cold Fox is a retro thriller with a feminist twist
In “Stone Cold Fox,” Kiernan Shipka plays Fox, a girl who grew up with a father weakened by an accident and a mother suffering from serious substance abuse problems. After Fox escapes home, she lives on the streets for a time before meeting Krysten Ritter’s Goldie, a charismatic drug dealer who charms the youngster and draws her into what turns out to be an abusive lesbian cult.
At first, Fox and Goldie begin a relationship, but after Fox realizes how unhealthy her adopted home is, she escapes again. On her way, she unwittingly steals a bag of drugs that she believes is full of money, prompting Goldie to embark on a dogged quest to recover the missing narcotics. This involves sending Kiefer Sutherland’s corrupt cop, Sergeant Billy Breaker, after Fox and kidnapping his sister, Spooky (Bluesy Burke). Fox isn’t about to stand for his sister being captured and plans to break into Goldie’s hideout to free Spooky.
All of this is shot in the style of some of the best grindhouse films, reinforcing the feeling that this film isn’t really interested in anything other than action. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Many viewers on Letterboxd were very impressed with “Stone Cold Fox” and its revenge thriller aesthetic, with one simply writing, “Mean gay Krysten Ritter is my favorite Krysten Ritter.”
Netflixers also love the movie. According to FlixPatrol, “Stone Cold Fox” is the most-watched movie on Netflix in the United States as of this writing. Despite a somewhat disappointing 60% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film clearly has a lot going for it.
