The Hollywood icon, Kevin Costner, revealed new details on an argument he had with the former owner of the New York Yankees, George Steinbrenner, during a recent revealing panel.
Costner discussed the little -known story during an appearance at the Fanatics Fest 2025. The panel he joined, entitled “Sports films Hall of Fame”, was organized by the former defensive defender of the NFL and the personality of the media Michael Strahan.
He recalled when Steinbrenner suddenly canceled the initial shooting of the 1999 film “For Love of the Game” at the Yankee Stadium, while the business executive was turned upside down by the Yankees lost in the end of the film.

“”NOW I think, I died unless I say something, “Costner shared with his audience. He then said that he had started to make a” tap dance “to convince Steinbrenner to let him film inside the stadium and called the whole situation” F —– Up “.
However, Costner was able to influence the passionate owner, stressing that the game in which the Yankees lost during the film was ultimately “devoid of meaning”.
“I said:” It’s a game devoid of meaning, George “,” he said. “‘And I will treat the Yankees with the respect you want to treat them with.'”
Costner was finally able to shoot the Yankee Stadium, and “For Love of the Game” was made. The real Yankees won the World Series in 1999, and to his surprise, Costner even received a special executive ring for the team championship.
“”[Steinbrenner] was very capable of exploding, and he was also capable of the most giant gestures you can imagine, “he added.
During the big interview, Costner also plunged into the way he used the lessons of sports films in which he played to navigate relationships with other actors and producers.
“I had actors and actresses who try to help me and play for me and that’s how I am with my management:” I want to win for my coach “,” he said. “And these are the kinds of actors I like to direct.”
He even explained that he sometimes uses a blackboard during his team’s cartography how to play a certain scene, a bit like a football coach would attract the locker room during half time.
Kevin Costner rejects discussions on retirement while he is moving forward with new projects at 70
“”There are a lot of things at stake in sport and movies, “said Costner.” So let’s go to the paintings, and don’t make a mistake. “”
“My promise is that I’m not going to let them look bad,” he added. “Their promise is that you have to go on time and get out of this makeup chair; put me.

Costner also thought about his work with his colleague legendary actor Burt Lancaster in the 1989 “Field of Dreams” film as another example of his leadership on the set of his films.
“”This guy was a superstar. He was incredible, but had problems, “he said about Lancaster.” He didn’t want me to stay on the set – he asked if I would leave. He was embarrassed and I said, “I’m not going anywhere. You do this perfectly. And he hung on there, and he understood correctly, because he is a professional. “”
“”You manage to win your worst day, “he continued.” And Burt that night, when he was humiliated, he found in himself to obtain these lines which now live forever in this film. “”
