Kalshi files for self-certification of contract that would allow users to be featured on college athletes

A new filing from Kalshi to self-certify a contract suggests the prediction market may be considering offering bets on college athletes.

The new filings submitted to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) by Kalshi on Tuesday, December 16 include a request for self-certification of contracts titled “The will he enter/withdraw from the transfer portal within a specific time frame? » and “Will will be transferred to <équipe> In ?”

These documents indicate that Kalshi could offer these contracts starting Wednesday, December 17 at the end of the day. It should be noted, however, that self-certified contracts do not necessarily mean that markets will be open on the specified date, if at all.

In fact, Kalshi said in a statement shared with Readwrite that there are no concrete plans to list these contracts, saying, “We are constantly certifying markets that we do not end up listing. We have no immediate plans to list these contracts.”

“As with all Kalshi Markets, users with material non-public information would be prohibited from trading in potential transfer portal markets. We have internal and third-party surveillance systems that monitor suspicious activity and, if necessary, we refer cases to the CFTC for enforcement.”

Kalshi and betting on college athletes

The filing appears to reference the NCAA Transfer Portal, a database of all college athletes who intend to transfer from one university to another. The portal is open from January 2 to 16, although players can make their intention to transfer known earlier.

Until now, Kalshi has largely avoided offering bets on individual college athletes, although there are many contracts available related to college sports in general.

When it comes to the sports betting market in general, traditional regulated sportsbooks cannot offer bets on transfer portal entrants or destinations. If Kalshi moves forward, it would be a sign that the prediction market is moving further into the gray area of regulation for which it has been criticized.
